Driving Instructor and Mentor

What is tiwi™?

tiwi is a breakthrough technology that provides immediate, real-time feedback to teen drivers when they exceed posted speed limits, drive aggressively, forget to wear their seat belt, or venture into areas that parents have designated for them to avoid. tiwi’s constant mentoring helps prevent crashes before they happen and instills safe driving skills in young drivers. Meanwhile, parents receive immediate alerts via text, email or phone and can view reports through an easy-to-use, web-based dashboard. You can also call the driver via the tiwi unit using our e-Call feature. If your teen has an emergency they can also push the e-Call button for immediate, live emergency assistance.

How will tiwi make my child a safer driver?

Unlike anything else on the road, tiwi doesn’t simply monitor, it mentors. No other system has the power to so dramatically impact a young driver’s skills and awareness. Instant, real-time mentoring for events such as aggressive driving or speeding help develop a young driver’s instincts and confidence.

Will this distract my teen while driving?

The tiwi unit is mounted in a corner of the windshield and does not distract or hinder a driver’s vision. The system is also carefully engineered to send alerts that capture the driver’s attention when it is critical. It is a functional, effective design that has been proven in millions of miles of successful use.

How are messages sent to the driver and to me?

The driver receives real-time mentoring through verbal in-cab coaching and messages sent directly from the unit. Meanwhile, parents can get alerts and notifications via a text message, email or phone call.

What controls or settings do I have?

You have full control to decide what features you want to activate and how you want to respond, both for the driver and for you. You decide everything, such as the phone or email to be alerted, how many miles per hour above the speed limit you want to allow your teen to drive, which zones or destinations will send you an alert when your teen arrives at or leaves the zone, and the sensitivity of the aggressive driving parameters.

What is Speed-by-Street™?

The Speed-by-Street feature is unique. Many GPS tracking systems allow you to be notified if the vehicle exceeds a certain speed limit, such as 75 MPH. tiwi goes much further in that it is programmed with most public roads in the U.S. and Canada, comparing a vehicle’s speed to the posted speed.

Is there special software I need to buy to use tiwi?

No. The tiwi control dashboard is a web-based system that’s easy to use and instantly accessible from any computer at any time — whether you’re at home, the office or on the road.

Is the system easy to use?

Every element of tiwi was designed to make it as simple, practical and worry-free as possible. We believe you’ll find it to be one of the most user-friendly web dashboards you’ve experienced.

Why can I rely on tiwi? Is service constant?

The tiwi technology has been proven reliable over hundreds of millions of miles driven by some of the world’s most safety-conscious organizations from global oil and gas companies to NASCAR.

What if someone other than the teen is driving the car?

Parents are able to turn off the unit from the web-based tiwi dashboard.

Will this help me receive discounts on car insurance?

Discounts are available or planned by several leading insurance companies. For example, through its DriveSmart for Teens™ program, the American National Property and Casualty Insurance Company is offering as much as a 15% discount for 16-year-old drivers.(See www.drivesmartforteens.com)

How do I get it installed?

tiwi is designed to be easily and quickly self-installed. An installation guide is included with the tiwi unit that is shipped to you. However, if you want to use the services of a professional installer, a list of installation locations near you is included in the shipment when you receive the product.

How big is the unit? Where is it mounted in the car?

The unit is about the size of a GPS device, 5” x 4”, and just over 1” thick. The recommended mounting location is on the left hand side (driver side) of the windshield — either lower- or upper-hand corners will work. Alternatively, a dashboard mount is available for purchase at www.tiwi.com.

Does it work in every car?

The mentoring, tracking, driver behavior, GPS, e-Call and Speed-by-Street features will work in vehicles with a 12-volt battery system (most cars manufactured after 1955). Some of the advanced features available from the vehicle’s computer (such as seatbelt and engine warning codes) are only available on later model cars and trucks that support vehicle bus data capabilities (since 1996 or 1993 in some limited models).

How do teens accept or react to the technology?

While you might expect teens to groan or complain, our experience has found just the opposite. Teen drivers quickly realize that the system is there to help them, guide them and protect them. It builds their confidence and puts parents at greater ease. The key is for parents and teens to work together and to use tiwi in a way that helps build a steady, positive conversation about safe driving. With tiwi in the car, everyone knows that driving behavior is being tracked. In this way, tiwi greatly reduces peer pressure to speed or get involved in other behaviors that endanger them and other occupants in the car.

Can my son or daughter disable the system?

It can be disabled by destructive measures or unplugging it from the vehicle bus, but an instant tamper notification is sent to you.
